THEMIS E, the fifth satellite in NASA's THEMIS constellation, flying in coordinated formation with THEMIS A, D, and their siblings to trace the chain of events that triggers auroral substorms — sudden, dramatic brightenings of the aurora caused by an abrupt release of energy stored in Earth's magnetic tail.
