One of ORBCOMM's second-generation (OG2) satellites, a major upgrade over the company's original 1990s fleet with faster message delivery, larger message sizes, and — critically — an added AIS receiver that tracks ship transponder signals globally alongside the constellation's core M2M messaging mission. OG2 satellites can relay data in near real-time rather than waiting for a ground station pass, a significant improvement for time-sensitive asset tracking.
