Amazonia-1 is Brazil's answer to a genuinely uncomfortable dependency: for decades, the country most responsible for protecting the Amazon rainforest had to rely on foreign satellites to actually watch it disappear. Launched in 2021 as Brazil's first fully domestically-built and operated Earth observation satellite, Amazonia-1 now tracks deforestation across the rainforest using imagery Brazil owns outright — no licensing fees, no foreign government able to restrict access during a political dispute.
