Haiyang-3A, part of China's ocean color and sea surface temperature monitoring program, launched to continue nearly two decades of continuous Chinese oceanographic data collection first begun by Haiyang-1A in 2002. Its data feeds both civilian fisheries management and, per most Western analyst assessments, maritime domain awareness across waters where China's territorial claims make independent oceanographic monitoring strategically significant.
