SpaceMobile-001 was one of the five BlueBird satellites AST SpaceMobile launched together on September 12, 2024, marking the company's first operational, revenue-track satellites after years of development and a single prototype, BlueWalker 3, that had already made headlines as one of the brightest artificial objects in the night sky. Each BlueBird carries roughly 700 square feet of unfolding antenna array — enough collecting area to pick up an ordinary smartphone's signal directly from around 340 miles up, without the phone needing any special satellite hardware. That capability is what makes the BlueBird constellation genuinely novel rather than an incremental upgrade to existing satellite phones: it's designed to work with the phone already in your pocket. Following launch, the satellites underwent calibration testing before beginning beta service with mobile carrier partners AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Rakuten, and Bell, aiming to deliver voice, text, and data connectivity anywhere a phone can see the sky.
