First of NASA's second-generation TDRS satellites with significantly higher data rates than its predecessors. TDRS-8 introduced Ka-band links that support the massive data volumes from modern Earth-observing and astronomical satellites. It demonstrated that space internet infrastructure could keep pace with the exponential growth in scientific data that 21st-century missions produce.
