Navstar 49 (USA 154), launched in 2003, is one of the last Block IIR satellites to reach orbit before GPS modernization shifted to the enhanced IIR-M generation. Each Block IIR satellite carries a 12.5-year design life and enough onboard computing power to autonomously monitor its own signal integrity — a safeguard against ever broadcasting a corrupted position fix, since a GPS satellite silently transmitting bad data is more dangerous to users than one that simply goes offline.
