ESA's first Project for On-Board Autonomy satellite, PROBA-1 was designed for a 2-year mission in 2001 and is still operational over 20 years later — ESA's longest continuously operating satellite. Its compact hyperspectral imager was years ahead of its time, and it pioneered the autonomous operations software allowing a satellite to plan its own observations without waiting for ground commands.
