Spain's first dedicated military communications satellite, providing the Spanish armed forces with X-band and UHF connectivity for operations in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Spainsat was Spain's first step toward sovereign military space communications, reducing dependence on NATO and US infrastructure for national operations. It supported Spanish contributions to ISAF in Afghanistan and EU missions across Africa.
