GeoEye-1 held the world record for commercial satellite resolution at launch in 2008 — 41 cm panchromatic, sharp enough to read basketball court markings. Google was its exclusive non-government customer, using its imagery for Google Maps and Google Earth. Its Inauguration Day 2009 photography became the benchmark for what commercial space imaging could achieve.
