One of Globalstar's second-generation satellites, launched as part of the company's response to a near-catastrophic failure of its original 1990s constellation, whose solar-panel-mounted amplifiers degraded years ahead of schedule. This satellite's continued operation underpins both legacy satellite phone customers and the newer, much larger population of iPhone users relying on Emergency SOS via satellite.
