An Indian communications and navigation satellite that achieved two firsts simultaneously. GSAT-8 was India's first satellite to operate Ka-band transponders for high-throughput broadband, and it carried the first GAGAN (GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation) operational payload providing precision approach guidance to Indian airports. GAGAN, built jointly by ISRO and the Airports Authority of India, makes every Indian airport capable of satellite-guided precision landings — a critical safety upgrade for the country's rapidly expanding aviation sector.
