A Canadian maritime surveillance satellite carrying an AIS receiver — listening for position broadcasts ships are legally required to transmit. From 400 miles up, a single AIS satellite receives signals from ships across a 2,500-mile-wide swath, providing maritime domain awareness over vast stretches of ocean that shore-based stations cannot reach.
