China's first second-generation polar weather satellite, FY-3A ushered in a new era for Chinese meteorology. Eleven instruments including a medium-resolution spectral imager and microwave sounders built the foundation of the Fengyun-3 series that now rivals NOAA and EUMETSAT in global coverage. Its name means 'Wind and Cloud.'
