A DirecTV satellite at 99°W providing 4K Ultra HD capability for DirecTV's US service. DirecTV-14 was specifically designed to carry 4K content — the first DirecTV satellite capable of broadcasting 4K resolution television to American homes. DirecTV's 4K strategy, enabled by DirecTV-14, was targeted at sports broadcasting where the additional resolution provides an immersive experience that streaming services struggle to match for live events.
