One of the Iridium NEXT satellites launched in a later 2017-2018 batch, continuing the systematic replacement of Iridium's original constellation. Each Iridium NEXT satellite also hosts secondary payloads beyond core telephony — including GPS radio occultation weather sensors that feed into NOAA's commercial weather data program, extracting extra scientific value from a constellation built primarily for telecommunications.
