GSAT0217 (Galileo 21), one of four satellites in the December 2017 launch, added coverage to a Galileo constellation increasingly integrated into everyday consumer technology — most flagship smartphones sold in Europe and beyond by this point included Galileo-compatible chips as standard, not an optional extra. Ariane 5's ability to carry four Galileo satellites at once, rather than the two a Soyuz rocket could manage, meaningfully compressed the constellation's remaining build-out timeline in the final years before Europe declared Galileo fully operational.
