Jiaotong VDES tests a genuinely new maritime safety technology: a VHF Data Exchange System that upgrades the aging AIS ship-tracking standard every large vessel already broadcasts on, adding far more bandwidth for weather updates, navigation warnings, and traffic management data to be sent directly to ships at sea from a single satellite — the next generation of the system that already tracks nearly every commercial vessel on Earth.
