The most powerful commercial communications satellite ever built when launched in 2023 — a 9-metric-ton behemoth with 500 Gbps of total capacity, more than double the throughput of the next most capable commercial satellite at the time. Jupiter 3 provides internet access to rural North and South America through Hughes Network Systems' HughesNet service, using hundreds of Ka-band spot beams to concentrate power where customers are. Its 18 kW solar arrays generate more power than any previous commercial satellite. Jupiter 3 shifts broadband from a subscription service to a commodity for millions of unserved rural Americans, Canadians, and Latin Americans.
