SATELIOT_1 is one of four small satellites a Barcelona startup launched together on August 16, 2024, aiming to turn ordinary cell phones and IoT sensors into satellite-connected devices without any extra hardware. Sateliot's pitch is standards compliance: its satellites are the first to fully implement the 3GPP 5G NB-IoT Non-Terrestrial Network standard, meaning any commercial narrowband IoT chip built to the global cellular spec can talk to them directly, no proprietary gateway or special antenna required. That's a meaningful bet against the industry norm, where most satellite-IoT operators use closed, incompatible protocols that lock customers into a single vendor. Sateliot has already signed roughly a billion euros in agreements with telecom operators like Telefónica and is racing toward a constellation of over 100 satellites by 2028, with this launch—which the company badged 'Revolution,' its mission patch built around Gaudí's dragon—bringing it a step closer to commercial revenue in agriculture, logistics, maritime tracking, and critical infrastructure monitoring in places terrestrial towers never reach.
