BRO-14 belongs to a French SIGINT constellation whose full name—Breizh Reconnaissance Orbiter—literally means 'Brittany Reconnaissance Orbiter,' a nod to the Rennes-based company that built it. Launched August 16, 2024 alongside its sibling BRO-15 on SpaceX's Transporter-11 mission, it's an 8U CubeSat carrying Unseenlabs' proprietary radio-frequency detection payload, designed to geolocate ships from space by picking up their radio emissions rather than relying on the Automatic Identification System transponders that vessels can simply switch off. That's the whole value proposition: illegal fishing boats, sanctioned oil tankers, and pirates all have strong incentives to go dark on AIS, and Unseenlabs' satellites can still find them. BRO-14 and 15 were the constellation's twelfth and thirteenth satellites, part of a build-out toward roughly 20 spacecraft, expanding maritime surveillance coverage that governments and commercial shipping insurers use to fight overfishing, sanctions evasion, and ocean dumping.
