A classified National Reconnaissance Office satellite launched January 21, 2025 on a Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral — one of the dozens of small NRO satellites deployed in 2024–2025 as part of the agency's 'proliferated architecture' strategy. The NRO deployed nearly 100 satellites in 2024 alone, deliberately shifting from a few large expensive spacecraft to many small resilient ones. USA 486 orbits at 43° inclination in low Earth orbit, a geometry that provides global coverage while optimizing revisit time over mid-latitude regions including most of Eurasia, the Middle East, and China's major military bases. The NRO does not describe its satellites' missions; the proliferated architecture satellites are believed to include imagery, signals intelligence, and communications relay variants built by SpaceX and Northrop Grumman.
