Radio ROSTO, a Russian amateur radio satellite launched in 1994, named for ROSTO — the Russian Defense Sports-Technical Organization, a Soviet-era voluntary society supporting civil aviation, army, and navy training that also sponsored amateur radio and youth technical education programs. The satellite carried amateur radio transponders allowing licensed operators worldwide to relay voice and data communications through it, part of a long tradition of Soviet and Russian satellites dual-purposed for both technical demonstration and the global ham radio community.
