A satellite from ICO Global Communications, a company that attempted to build a mobile satellite phone service in medium Earth orbit and later transitioned to geostationary satellites. ICO-G1 represented one of several ventures in the late 2000s trying to provide direct mobile satellite connectivity for portable devices — a vision ahead of available technology at the time. The satellite demonstrates how the commercial satellite industry repeatedly tried to solve the mobile connectivity problem that LEO constellations are now addressing successfully.
