The fifth Inmarsat-3 satellite, providing Pacific Ocean GMDSS coverage. Inmarsat's L-band satellite system fundamentally transformed maritime safety — before GMDSS, ocean emergencies often went unreported simply because ships had no way to transmit distress signals across vast ocean distances. Inmarsat-3 made it possible for any vessel anywhere on Earth's oceans to reach rescue coordination centers within seconds of an emergency.
