An Astra satellite at 19.2°E continuing the coverage of Europe's premier satellite television position. Astra-1M carries HD and standard definition channels for the European market — the migration to HD broadcasting that began in the 2010s required new satellites with more transponder capacity, as HD channels require three times the bandwidth of standard definition. Astra-1M was part of SES's fleet expansion to accommodate Europe's HD transition.
