A large geostationary satellite intended to provide mobile satellite phone services across North America, designed to communicate with handheld devices using a massive 22-meter antenna. SkyTerra's company went bankrupt before the service launched, and the satellite was acquired by LightSquared and later Ligado Networks. SkyTerra-1 represents the generation of large-antenna GEO mobile satellite concepts that preceded the current generation of LEO direct-to-device constellations.
