Russia's first modern data relay satellite, designed to provide communications links for Russian spacecraft in low Earth orbit — including cosmonauts on the ISS and robotic scientific missions. Luch-5A functions as Russia's equivalent to NASA's TDRS system, relaying data from the Russian segment of the ISS to mission control in Moscow without needing a direct line of sight to Russian ground stations.
