South Korea's third science and technology satellite carries a compact infrared camera for astronomical imaging and an instrument to measure the flux of energetic particles in low Earth orbit. Developed by KAIST and the Korean Aerospace Research Institute, STSAT-3 was built as a demonstration of South Korea's growing capability to design and operate small science spacecraft independently, part of the country's push to become a major space power.
