Bolivia's first satellite, named after Túpac Katari — an 18th-century Aymara indigenous leader who led one of the largest indigenous uprisings in South American history, besieging the city of La Paz for months before his execution. Bolivia deliberately named its satellite after this revolutionary figure as a statement of national sovereignty and indigenous cultural pride. The satellite provides internet, telephone, and TV services to remote Bolivian communities in the Andes and Amazon where terrestrial infrastructure is impossible to build economically.
