China's first commercial Ka-band high-throughput satellite, officially designated Shijian-13 in its experimental phase before becoming operational ChinaSat-16. It was China's technology validation for next-generation broadband satellite technology — the first Chinese satellite to use electric propulsion for orbit raising, reducing launch mass significantly. It demonstrated Ka-band broadband delivery at performance levels previously only achievable by Western commercial operators.
