PRISMA (PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa), the Italian Space Agency's hyperspectral Earth observation satellite, launched March 2019. Rather than the handful of spectral bands most Earth-imaging satellites use, PRISMA captures 239 contiguous bands spanning the visible to shortwave infrared — enough spectral resolution to identify specific mineral compositions, detect crop diseases before visible symptoms appear, and distinguish pollutants in water bodies invisible to standard multispectral cameras. It established Italy as one of a handful of nations with independent hyperspectral Earth observation capability.
