The European Data Relay System's second node — a space-based laser communication relay that connects Earth observation satellites to ground stations across Europe at 1.8 Gbps via optical link. Instead of waiting for a satellite to pass over a ground station, EDRS-C continuously receives laser beams from LEO satellites and relays data to ground via Ka-band radio. It serves Sentinel Earth observation satellites, receiving their data continuously rather than in bursts — dramatically reducing the time from observation to data delivery for European Copernicus emergency response operations.
