BSAT-2A, a Japanese direct-broadcast television satellite launched successfully in March 2001 to carry NHK and WOWOW's digital HD broadcasts across Japan. Its intended backup twin, BSAT-2B, launched four months later on the same Ariane 5 rocket family — and was stranded in a useless, unusably low orbit after an upper-stage propulsion failure, leaving BSAT-2A to carry Japan's digital broadcast transition alone until a replacement could be built.
