Cosmos 2436, launched in 2007, is part of the GLONASS-M generation that restored Russia's satellite navigation system after its near-collapse in the chaotic post-Soviet 1990s. Each GLONASS-M satellite operates in one of three orbital planes at a 64.8° inclination — noticeably steeper than GPS's 55° planes, a deliberate design choice giving GLONASS stronger coverage at high northern latitudes, valuable for a country whose territory extends deep into the Arctic.
