Cosmos 2457, launched in 2009, continues the steady GLONASS-M replenishment that rebuilt Russia's navigation constellation to full strength. GLONASS-M satellites carry cesium atomic clocks with stability comparable to GPS's, the core precision technology that makes satellite-based positioning possible at all — measuring the travel time of a radio signal moving at the speed of light accurately enough to resolve position on the ground to within a few meters.
