A Canadian DTH satellite carrying the HD channels that defined Bell Satellite TV's competitive positioning. As Canadian consumers upgraded to HDTV, Nimiq-5 provided the bandwidth headroom for the hundreds of HD channels Bell needed to match cable's expanding HD lineups. The migration to HD satellite broadcasting doubled and tripled bandwidth requirements — satellites like Nimiq-5 made it possible without degrading existing standard-definition service.
