India's first S-band mobile satellite — providing mobile satellite phone services using handsets with small antennas, more convenient than the L-band terminals of international competitors. GSAT-6 was India's technology demonstrator for handheld mobile satellite communications, with the primary operational purpose of serving Indian defense forces and disaster response teams. Its large 6-meter unfurlable antenna was a first for Indian satellite construction.
