China's third-generation geostationary satellite carries 14 spectral channels and a lightning mapping imager — making China only the third nation after the US and Japan to deploy space-based lightning detection at geostationary altitude. Full-disk imagery every 15 minutes has dramatically improved China's typhoon track forecasting accuracy.
