Launched alongside Express-103 on a single Proton rocket, Express-80 covers Russia's core market of European Russia and neighboring countries. Together the Express-80 and 103 pair significantly expanded Russian commercial satellite capacity at a time when Russia faced growing pressure from global commercial satellite operators. Russia's satellite communications sector remains largely insulated from Western competition over its domestic market.
