The first geostationary satellite of China's BeiDou-2 navigation system — China's answer to GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. BeiDou GEO satellites provide both navigation signals and a unique Short Message Service that allows two-way messaging without internet connectivity, originally developed for Chinese fishing vessels in remote waters and later used by hikers, disaster responders, and military units throughout China. BeiDou GEO satellites hover over the Asia-Pacific, providing stronger signals than the US GPS system in that region.
