A BeiDou-2 geostationary navigation satellite providing positioning and Short Message Service across Asia. China has made BeiDou's Short Message Service a distinctive feature — the ability to send and receive text messages through the navigation satellite itself, not through a separate cellular network, has made BeiDou the preferred navigation system for Chinese fishing fleets, mountaineering expeditions, and military units operating beyond cellular coverage.
