The first satellite of India's Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), now known as NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation). India built NavIC for the same reason China built BeiDou — the 1999 Kargil conflict demonstrated India's vulnerability when the US restricted GPS access for military targeting. IRNSS-1A began India's path to navigation sovereignty, providing the first Indian-controlled positioning signals over the subcontinent.
