China's first mobile satellite phone system satellite — the Chinese equivalent of Inmarsat, providing mobile satellite voice and data services across China and neighboring areas. Tiantong ('Sky Link') gives China sovereign mobile satellite communications for remote area users, maritime vessels in Chinese waters, and military forces. Before Tiantong, Chinese users in remote areas depended on Inmarsat — a foreign operator subject to service denial in geopolitical conflicts. Tiantong eliminates that dependency.
