Bangladesh's first satellite, named after Bangabandhu — 'Friend of Bengal' — the honorific given to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh who led the country's independence movement. Bangabandhu Satellite-1 provides direct-to-home TV broadcasting, internet connectivity, and disaster warning communications across Bangladesh and surrounding regions. For a low-lying country extremely vulnerable to cyclones and floods, reliable communications satellite capacity is not just commercial — it's a matter of national survival.
