An SES C-band satellite at 138°W serving the US cable distribution market as part of the C-band clearing program. The US FCC required satellite operators to clear the lower C-band frequencies for 5G wireless use, requiring new satellites that operate only in the upper C-band. SES-18 was specifically built for this C-band clearing transition, ensuring that US cable television distribution could continue serving the cable industry while the lower frequencies were repurposed for 5G networks.
