Yaogan-33 (03), continuing China's modernized SAR reconnaissance satellite line that traces back to the original Jianbing-5 all-weather radar imaging satellites. Each successive Yaogan-33 launch adds capacity to a program specifically valued for penetrating the near-constant cloud cover over China's southern provinces — Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi, and Hainan — where optical satellites are frequently blind.
