A Philippine communications satellite — 'Agila' means 'Eagle' in Filipino. The Philippines has historically relied on foreign satellite operators to connect its 7,600 islands, and Agila represents the country's effort to develop sovereign satellite capability for Southeast Asia's second-largest archipelago nation. The satellite provides broadcasting and telecommunications capacity across the Philippine archipelago where satellite connectivity is often the most practical link between islands.
