Geostationary Atmospheric Sounder · EUMETSAT / ESA

Right now

It moves every second. See exactly where it is — worked out from its orbit, on your own device — on the live 3D globe.

Europe's first geostationary infrared sounder — a completely new capability for European meteorology. MTG-S1 doesn't image clouds; it measures temperature and humidity in 3D across Europe and Africa every hour in 3,600 spectral channels. Scientists compare it to replacing a 2D weather map with a 3D scan — the leap MRI brought to medicine, applied to the sky. Expected to extend severe storm warnings by 30 minutes.
