The original operational Thuraya satellite — the mobile satellite phone service that brought voice connectivity to the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Thuraya uses L-band signals to communicate directly with handheld phones, eliminating the need for large ground terminals. It became the de facto emergency communication network for humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones and disaster areas across the Arab world and Africa — from journalists in Baghdad to aid workers in Darfur.
